Expansion of medicinal cannabis access in Isle of Man pharmacies

Expansion of medicinal cannabis access in Isle of Man pharmacies
DHSC to open applications for licenses to an "unrestricted number of pharmacies" over medicinal cannabis soon

The Isle of Man is preparing to widen access to medicinal cannabis through pharmacies following a successful trial phase that has strengthened regulatory confidence, Health Minister Lawrie Hooper MHK said recently.

Initially launched with Karsons Pharmacy in Onchan, which was granted a license to import and dispense cannabis products for private prescriptions, the trial's positive outcomes have paved the way for broader implementation.

Minister Hooper assured members of the House of Keys that a recent review found no substantial risks or concerns, prompting the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to open applications for licenses to an "unrestricted number" of pharmacies starting July 8.

Currently, medicinal cannabis remains unavailable through the Manx NHS, and no local GPs are authorized to prescribe it.

However, patients on the Isle of Man can now obtain prescriptions from private clinics in England, enabling local pharmacies to dispense these medicines.

Minister Hooper emphasized that expanding the service aligns with establishing a long-term licensing framework aimed at enhancing patient accessibility, affordability, and safety.

The initiative aims to deliver a more effective and patient-centric healthcare service tailored to meet evolving community needs.

Looking ahead, the Department of Health and Social Care plans to revise import licenses to accommodate larger quantities, potentially reducing costs for pharmacies and patients alike.

Minister Hooper acknowledged an anticipated increase in demand, attributing it in part to misconceptions about medicinal cannabis applications, according to BBC.

To uphold stringent standards, the department will introduce six-monthly inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain the integrity of the service across participating pharmacies.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in healthcare provision on the Isle of Man, reflecting broader trends towards expanding access to medicinal cannabis under regulated frameworks.
